{"id":47981,"date":"2022-09-28T16:14:25","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T21:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/fill-fill-up\/"},"modified":"2022-09-28T16:14:25","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T21:14:25","slug":"fill-fill-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/fill-fill-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Fill, Fill up"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fill, Fill up<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes (I) &#8220;to make full, to fill to the full;&#8221; in the Passive Voice, &#8220;to be filled, made full;&#8221; it is used (1) of things: a net, <span class='bible'>Mat 13:48<\/span>; a building, <span class='bible'>Joh 12:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 2:2<\/span>; a city, <span class='bible'>Act 5:28<\/span>; needs, <span class='bible'>Phi 4:19<\/span>, AV, &#8220;supply,&#8221; RV, &#8220;fulfill;&#8221; metaphorically, of valleys, <span class='bible'>Luk 3:5<\/span>; figuratively, of a measure of iniquity, <span class='bible'>Mat 23:32<\/span>; (2) of persons: (a) of the members of the church, the body of Christ, as filled by Him, <span class='bible'>Eph 1:23<\/span> (&#8220;all things in all the members&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Eph 4:10<\/span>; in <span class='bible'>Eph 3:19<\/span>, of their being filled &#8220;into&#8221; (eis), RV, &#8220;unto,&#8221; AV, &#8220;with&#8221; (all the fullness of God); of their being &#8220;made full&#8221; in Him, <span class='bible'>Col 2:10<\/span> (RV, for AV, &#8220;complete&#8221;); (b) of Christ Himself: with wisdom, in the days of His flesh, <span class='bible'>Luk 2:40<\/span>; with joy, in His return to the Father, <span class='bible'>Act 2:28<\/span>; (c) of believers: with the Spirit, <span class='bible'>Eph 5:18<\/span>; with joy, <span class='bible'>Act 13:52<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Ti 1:4<\/span>; with joy and peace, <span class='bible'>Rom 15:13<\/span>; [from these are to be distinguished those passages which speak of joy as being fulfilled or completed, which come under FULFILL, <span class='bible'>Joh 3:29<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 15:11<\/span> (RV); <span class='bible'>Joh 16:24<\/span> (RV); <span class='bible'>Phi 2:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 1:4<\/span> (RV); <span class='bible'>2Jo 1:12<\/span> (RV)]; with knowledge, <span class='bible'>Rom 15:14<\/span>; with comfort, <span class='bible'>2Co 7:4<\/span>; with the fruits of righteousness, <span class='bible'>Phi 1:11<\/span> (Gk. &#8220;fruit&#8221;); with the knowledge of God&#8217;s will, <span class='bible'>Col 1:9<\/span>; with abundance through material supplies by fellow believers, <span class='bible'>Phi 4:18<\/span>; (d) of the hearts of believers as the seat of emotion and volition, <span class='bible'>Joh 16:6<\/span> (sorrow) <span class='bible'>Act 5:3<\/span> (deceitfulness); (e) of the unregenerate who refuse recognition of God, <span class='bible'>Rom 1:29<\/span>; (II) &#8220;to accomplish, complete, fulfill.&#8221; See ACCOMPLISH, FULFILL. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill up adequately, completely&#8221; (ana, &#8220;up,&#8221; and No. 1), is twice translated by the verbs &#8220;to fill, to fill up,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 14:16<\/span>, RV (for AV, &#8220;occupieth&#8221;), of a believer as a member of an assembly, who &#8220;fills&#8221; the position or condition (not one who &#8220;fills&#8221; it by assuming it) of being unable to understand the language of him who had the gift of tongues; in <span class='bible'>1Th 2:16<\/span>, &#8220;to fill up their sins,&#8221; of the Jews who persisted in their course of antagonism and unbelief. See FULFILL. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill up in turn (or on one&#8217;s part;&#8221; anti, &#8220;corresponding to,&#8221; and No. 2), is used in <span class='bible'>Col 1:24<\/span>, of the Apostle&#8217;s responsive devotion to Christ in &#8220;filling&#8221; up, or undertaking on his part a full share of, the sufferings which follow after the sufferings of Christ, and are experienced by the members of His Body, the church. &#8220;The point of the Apostle&#8217;s boast is that Christ, the sinless Master, should have left something for Paul, the unworthy servant, to suffer&#8221; (Lightfoot, on Col., p. 165). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill completely&#8221; (sun, &#8220;with,&#8221; and No. 1), is used in the Passive Voice (a) of a boat filling with water, and, by metonymy, of the occupants themselves, <span class='bible'>Luk 8:23<\/span> (RV, &#8220;were filling&#8221;); (b) of &#8220;fulfilling,&#8221; with regard to time, &#8220;when the days were well-nigh come,&#8221; RV, for AV, &#8220;when the time was come&#8221; (RV, marg., &#8220;were being fulfilled&#8221;), <span class='bible'>Luk 9:51<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 2:1<\/span>, see RV, marg. See COME. In the Sept. <span class='bible'>Jer 25:12<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>  lengthened forms of pleo, &#8220;to fill&#8221; (pletho supplies certain tenses of pimplemi), is used (1) of things; boats, with fish, <span class='bible'>Luk 5:7<\/span>; a sponge, with vinegar, <span class='bible'>Mat 27:48<\/span> (some mss. have this verb in <span class='bible'>Joh 19:29<\/span>); a city, with confusion, <span class='bible'>Act 19:29<\/span>; a wedding, with guests, <span class='bible'>Mat 22:10<\/span>; (2) of persons (only in Luke&#8217;s writings: (a) with the Holy Spirit, <span class='bible'>Luk 1:15<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Luk 1:41<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Luk 1:67<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 2:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 4:8<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 4:31<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 9:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 13:9<\/span>; (b) with emotions: wrath, <span class='bible'>Luk 4:28<\/span>; fear, <span class='bible'>Luk 5:26<\/span>; madness, <span class='bible'>Luk 6:11<\/span>; wonder, amazement, <span class='bible'>Act 3:10<\/span>; jealousy, <span class='bible'>Act 5:17<\/span>, RV, for AV, &#8220;indignation,&#8221; and <span class='bible'>Act 13:45<\/span> (AV, &#8220;envy&#8221;). For its other significance, &#8220;to complete,&#8221; see ACCOMPLISH. <\/p>\n<p>  (as in No. 5), &#8220;to fill full, to satisfy,&#8221; is used (a) of &#8220;filling&#8221; the hungry, <span class='bible'>Luk 1:53<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 6:12<\/span>; of the abundance of the rich, <span class='bible'>Luk 6:25<\/span>; (b) metaphorically, of a company of friends, <span class='bible'>Rom 15:24<\/span>, RV, &#8220;satisfied,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;filled.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> an alternative form of No. 6, is found in <span class='bible'>Act 14:17<\/span>, &#8220;filling (your hearts),&#8221; of God&#8217;s provision for mankind. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill or satisfy with food,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 15:33<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 4:12<\/span>, is used metaphorically in <span class='bible'>Mat 5:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 6:21<\/span>. See FEED. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill or load full,&#8221; is used of a boat, <span class='bible'>Mar 4:37<\/span> (RV, &#8220;was filling&#8221;); a sponge, <span class='bible'>Mar 15:36<\/span> (cp. No. 5, <span class='bible'>Mat 27:48<\/span>); a house, <span class='bible'>Luk 14:23<\/span>; the belly, <span class='bible'>Luk 15:16<\/span>; waterpots, <span class='bible'>Joh 2:7<\/span>; baskets, <span class='bible'>Joh 6:13<\/span>; bowls, with fire, <span class='bible'>Rev 8:5<\/span>; the temple, with smoke, <span class='bible'>Rev 15:8<\/span>. Cp. gemo, &#8220;to be full.&#8221; See FULL. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to satisfy&#8221; (akin to koros, &#8220;a surfeit&#8221;), is used metaphorically of spiritual things, in <span class='bible'>1Co 4:8<\/span>, RV, &#8220;ye are filled;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Act 27:38<\/span>, &#8220;had eaten enough,&#8221; lit., &#8220;having being satisfied with food.&#8221; See EAT, ENOUGH. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fill full,&#8221; from mestos, &#8220;full,&#8221; is used of being &#8220;filled&#8221; with wine, <span class='bible'>Act 2:13<\/span>, RV, &#8220;are filled with.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> fullness, has two meanings, (a) in the Active sense, &#8220;that which fills up,&#8221; a piece of undressed cloth on an old garment, <span class='bible'>Mat 9:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 2:21<\/span>, lit., &#8220;the filling&#8221; (RV, &#8220;that which should fill it up&#8221;), i.e., &#8220;the patch,&#8221; which is probably the significance; (b) &#8220;that which has been completed, the fullness,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mar 8:20<\/span>. See FULLNESS. <\/p>\n<p> Notes: (1) In <span class='bible'>Rev 18:6<\/span>, AV, kerannumi, &#8220;to mix,&#8221; is incorrectly rendered &#8220;to fill full&#8221; (RV, to mingle).
