Sacrificing a political career under Napoleon, he became a priest in 1811 , and with Abbe  de Rauzan founded the Missionaries of France . He was raised to the episcopate, 1824 , but had to leave France , as he refused to sign the Gallican declaration of 1682 . At the request of Bishop  Flaget and Bishop  Purcell, he was sent by Gregory XVI on a successful missionary tour through the United States and Canada , 1839 -1841 , and in 1842  went to Rome, where he was made a Roman count and Assistant at the Pontifical Throne.
