Educated at the Seminary of Quebec, he was ordained, 1819 , and went west as vicar-general and first missionary to the Oregon country, 1838 . He was made vicar Apostolic and consecrated in Montreal, 1845 , being named Archbishop  of Oregon City, 1846 .
