Educated at Quebec Seminary, he was early forced to forsake public life, retiring to the country for 30 years of study, producing, at the age of 75, &#8220;Les Anciens Canadiens&#8221; (The Early Canadians), an historical novel based on fact, illustrating national character and customs, and relating the fall of New France.
