Here he discharged his pastoral duties faithfully until his death in 1744. As a writer, he was marked by industry, learning, and critical sagacity. He wrote a number of controversial tracts on the Evidences of Christianity in reply to Tindal and Chubb, and on the Trinity. Besides these, he published A free and impartial Study of the Holy Scriptures recommended, being notes on peculiar texts of Scripture (Lond.  1729-36. 3 vols. 8vo):  A Paraphrase and Notes on the three last Chapters of the Epistle to the Hebrews (London, 1733, 4to). In theology he was a semi-Arian.
