He fought against the Turks, 1566, returned to France and joined in the second and third Huguenot  wars, and took an active part in the massacre of Saint Bartholomew&#8217;s Day. When the Catholic League was formed, 1576, he became its hero, and virtual leader against the Protestants under Henry of Navarre.
