Entering the Irish Parliament, 1775, he won fame as an orator, advocating free trade and legislative independence for Ireland . Though a Protestant he championed the Catholic Relief Bill, and, having retired from Parliament, 1797, re-entered, 1805, chiefly to help that cause.
