A name frequently given to the edifice in which Christians assemble for the worship of God, not because God dwells there by any visible or special presence, as of old he dwelt between the cherubims, but because it is dedicated to God, and set apart for his service. In Gen 28:17, Gen 28:22 = BETHEL (which see). In Jgs, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezr, Neh, Ps, etc. (beth ha-‘aselohm), a designation of the sanctuary = house of Yahweh (of the tabernacle, Jdg 18:31; Jdg 20:18, Jdg 20:26 the King James Version; of the temple, 1Ch 9:11; 1Ch 24:5 the King James Version; 2Ch 5:14; Psa 42:4; Isa 2:3, etc.; of the 2nd temple, Ezr 5:8, Ezr 5:15; Neh 6:10; Neh 13:11; compare Mat 12:4). Spiritually, in the New Testament, the house of God (okos theou) is the church or community of believers (1Ti 3:15; Heb 10:21; 1Pe 4:17; compare 1Co 3:9, 1Co 3:16, 1Co 3:17; 1Pe 2:5).<\/p>\n
