Thus in Deu 8:3, it is said, &#8220;he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger,&#8221; where the latter is the instrument of the former. So Deu 32:4, &#8220;they shall be burnt with hunger;&#8221; i.e. shall be tormented or afflicted. So to fast is often called to afflict one&#8217;s soul; as in Lev 16:29; Lev 16:31; Isa 58:5.<\/p>\n<p>In Aristophanes, hunger is proverbially used for great misery.f1 See 1Co 4:11; 2Co 11:27; Php 4:12.<\/p>\n<p>By several expressions of our Saviour, &#8220;to hunger and thirst,&#8221; signify to be in want of hearing God&#8217;s Word; that is, to be hindered by persecution from worshipping God in peace.
