{"id":56349,"date":"2022-09-28T22:32:20","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T03:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/ignorance-ignorant-ignorantly\/"},"modified":"2022-09-28T22:32:20","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T03:32:20","slug":"ignorance-ignorant-ignorantly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/ignorance-ignorant-ignorantly\/","title":{"rendered":"Ignorance, Ignorant, Ignorantly"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Ignorance, Ignorant, Ignorantly<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;want of knowledge or perception&#8221; (akin to agnoeo, &#8220;to be ignorant&#8221;), denotes &#8220;ignorance&#8221; on the part of the Jews regarding Christ, <span class='bible'>Act 3:17<\/span>; of Gentiles in regard to God, <span class='bible'>Act 17:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eph 4:18<\/span> (here including the idea of willful blindness: see <span class='bible'>Rom 1:28<\/span>, not the &#8220;ignorance&#8221; which mitigates guilt); <span class='bible'>1Pe 1:14<\/span>, of the former unregenerate condition of those who became believers (RV, &#8220;in the time of your ignorance&#8221;). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;ignorance&#8221; as directly opposed to gnosis, which signifies &#8220;knowledge&#8221; as a result of observation and experience (a, negative, ginosko, &#8220;to know;&#8221; cp. Eng., &#8220;agnostic&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Co 15:34<\/span> (&#8220;no knowledge&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Pe 2:15<\/span>. In both these passages reprehensible &#8220;ignorance&#8221; is suggested. See KNOWLEDGE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;a sin of ignorance,&#8221; occurs in <span class='bible'>Heb 9:7<\/span>, &#8220;errors&#8221; (RV marg., &#8220;ignorances&#8221;). For the corresponding verb in <span class='bible'>Heb 5:2<\/span> see B, No. 1. What is especially in view in these passages in unwitting error. For Israel a sacrifice was appointed, greater in proportion to the culpabililty of the guilty, greater, for instance, for a priest or ruler than for a private person. Sins of &#8220;ignorance,&#8221; being sins, must be expiated. A believer guilty of a sin of &#8220;ignorance&#8221; needs the efficacy of the expiatory sacrifice of Christ, and finds &#8220;grace to help.&#8221; Yet, as the conscience of the believer receives enlightenment, what formerly may have been done in &#8220;ignorance&#8221; becomes a sin against the light and demands a special confession, to receive forgiveness, <span class='bible'>1Jo 1:8-9<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> primarily &#8220;a private person&#8221; in contrast to a state official, hence, &#8220;a person without professional knowledge, unskilled, uneducated, unlearned,&#8221; is translated &#8220;unlearned&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 14:16<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:23-24<\/span>, of those who have no knowledge of the facts relating to the testimony borne in and by a local church; &#8220;rude&#8221; in <span class='bible'>2Co 11:6<\/span>, of the Apostle&#8217;s mode of speech in the estimation of the Corinthians; &#8220;ignorant men,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Act 4:13<\/span>, of the speech of the Apostle Peter and John in the estimation of the rulers, elders and scribes in Jerusalem. <\/p>\n<p> While agrammatoi (&#8220;unlearned&#8221;) may refer to their being unacquainted with rabbinical learning, idiotai would signify &#8220;laymen,&#8221; in contrast with the religious officials. See RUDE, UNLEARNED. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies (a) &#8220;to be ignorant, not to know,&#8221; either intransitively, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:38<\/span> (in the 2nd occurrence in this verse, the RV text translates the Active Voice, the margin the Passive); <span class='bible'>1Ti 1:13<\/span>, lit., &#8220;being ignorant (I did it);&#8221; <span class='bible'>Heb 5:2<\/span>, &#8220;ignorant;&#8221; or transitively, <span class='bible'>2Pe 2:12<\/span>, AV, &#8220;understand not,&#8221; RV, &#8220;are ignorant (of);&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 13:27<\/span>, &#8220;knew (Him) not;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 17:23<\/span>, RV, &#8220;(what ye worship) in ignorance,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;(whom ye) ignorantly (worship),&#8221; lit., &#8220;(what) not knowing (ye worship);&#8221; also rendered by the verb &#8220;to be ignorant that,&#8221; or &#8220;to be ignorant of,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rom 1:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 10:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 11:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 10:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 12:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 1:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 2:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Th 4:13<\/span>; &#8220;to know not,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rom 2:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 6:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 7:1<\/span>; &#8220;to be unknown&#8221; (Passive Voice), <span class='bible'>2Co 6:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gal 1:22<\/span>; (b) &#8220;not to understand,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Mar 9:32<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 9:45<\/span>.
