Besides collaborating with his brother in the Saint Bavon altar-piece, he achieved fame as a portrait painter. Two of his best-known works are the &#8220;Man with the Pinks&#8221; (Berlin Museum) and &#8220;Arnolfini and his Wife&#8221; (National Gallery). He entered the service of Philip of Burgundy in 1425, as an artist and a trusted envoy on delicate diplomatic missions, living at Lille until 1431 when he settled in Bruges.
