After studying in Vienna he went to Rome, 1810, where he founded, with Friedrich Schadow and Peter von Cornelius, a school of painters called the &#8220;Nazarenes,&#8221; who aimed to restore to religious painting the truth and spirituality of the Italian primitives. His art-study led him into the Church in 1811.
