He was educated at Saint Macartan&#8217;s College, Monaghan, Saint John&#8217;s College, Fordham, New York, Saint Joseph&#8217;s Seminary, Troy, and the American College, Rome, where he was ordained priest, 1870 . He was assistant rector of Saint Peter&#8217;s church, New Brighton, Staten Island, was created domestic prelate by Pope Leo XIII, with the title of Monsignor, 1884 ; and vicar-general of the Archdiocese  of New York, 1891 . He became titular Bishop  of Zeugma and auxiliary  Bishop  of New York, 1895 , and succeeded Archbishop  Corrigan to the archiepiscopal  see, 1902 , being created cardinal , 1911 . During his administration the archdiocese  made extraordinary progress in the erection of parishes and opening of Catholic  schools. He was a decisive force in the hierarchy by composing differences which had divided certain groups among them. He encouraged every effort on the part of the laity and clergy  that &#8220;seemed to make for good.&#8221; He was most earnest in his cooperation with the editors of the Catholic Encyclopedia, and to him largely is due its publication.
