(though the verb is used three times), but is frequent in 2 Cor., where the noun is used five times (for <span class='bible'>2Co 7:4<\/span>, RV, see Note below), and the verb eight times, suggestive of the Apostle&#8217;s relief in comparison with the circumstances of the 1st Epistle; in <span class='bible'>Col 1:11<\/span>, AV, &#8220;joyfulness,&#8221; RV, &#8220;joy.&#8221; The word is sometimes used, by metonymy, of the occasion or cause of &#8220;joy,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Luk 2:10<\/span> (lit., &#8220;I announce to you a great joy&#8221;); in <span class='bible'>2Co 1:15<\/span>, in some mss., for charis, &#8220;benefit;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Phi 4:1<\/span>, where the readers are called the Apostle&#8217;s &#8220;joy;&#8221; so <span class='bible'>1Th 2:19-20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 12:2<\/span>, of the object of Christ&#8217;s &#8220;joy;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Jam 1:2<\/span>, where it is connected with falling into trials; perhaps also in <span class='bible'>Mat 25:21<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mat 25:23<\/span>, where some regard it as signifying, concretely, the circumstances attending cooperation in the authority of the Lord. See also the Note following No. 3. <\/p>\n<p> Note: In <span class='bible'>Heb 12:11<\/span>, &#8220;joyous&#8221; represents the phrase meta, &#8220;with,&#8221; followed by chara, lit., &#8220;with joy.&#8221; So in <span class='bible'>Heb 10:34<\/span>, &#8220;joyfully;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>2Co 7:4<\/span> the noun is used with the Middle Voice of huperperisseuo, &#8220;to abound more exceedingly,&#8221; and translated &#8220;(I overflow) with joy,&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;I am exceeding joyful&#8221;). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;exultation, exuberant joy.&#8221; Cp. See GLADNESS. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> is rendered &#8220;joy&#8221; in the AV of <span class='bible'>Act 2:28<\/span>, RV, &#8220;gladness,&#8221; as in <span class='bible'>Act 14:17<\/span>. See GLADNESS. <\/p>\n<p> Note: &#8220;Joy&#8221; is associated with life, e.g., <span class='bible'>1Th 3:8-9<\/span>. Experiences of sorrow prepare for, and enlarge, the capacity for &#8220;joy,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Joh 16:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 5:3-4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 7:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 8:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 10:34<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jam 1:2<\/span>. Persecution for Christ&#8217;s sake enhances &#8220;joy,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 5:11-12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 5:41<\/span>. Other sources of &#8220;joy&#8221; are faith, <span class='bible'>Rom 15:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 1:25<\/span>; hope, <span class='bible'>Rom 5:2<\/span> (kauchaomai, see B, No. 2); <span class='bible'>Rom 12:12<\/span> (chairo, see B, No. 1); the &#8220;joy&#8221; of others, <span class='bible'>Rom 12:15<\/span>, which is distinctive of Christian sympathy. Cp. <span class='bible'>1Th 3:9<\/span>. In the OT and the NT God Himself is the ground and object of the believer&#8217;s &#8220;joy,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Psa 35:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Psa 43:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Isa 61:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 1:47<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 5:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 3:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 4:4<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to rejoice, be glad,&#8221; is translated &#8220;joyfully&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Luk 19:6<\/span>, lit., &#8220;rejoicing;&#8221; &#8220;we joyed,&#8221; <span class='bible'>2Co 7:13<\/span>; &#8220;I joy,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Phi 2:17<\/span>; &#8220;do ye joy,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Phi 2:18<\/span>; &#8220;joying,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Col 2:5<\/span>; &#8220;we joy,&#8221; <span class='bible'>1Th 3:9<\/span>. It is contrasted with weeping and sorrow, e.g., in <span class='bible'>Joh 16:20<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Joh 16:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 12:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 7:30<\/span> (cp. <span class='bible'>Psa 30:5<\/span>). See FAREWELL, GLAD, GREETING, HAIL, REJOICE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to boast, glory, exult,&#8221; is rendered &#8220;we joy,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 5:11<\/span>, AV (RV, &#8220;we rejoice&#8221;). It would have been an advantage to translate this word distinctively by the verbs &#8220;to glory&#8221; or &#8220;to exult.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to exult, rejoice greatly,&#8221; is translated &#8220;with exceeding joy&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Pe 4:13<\/span> (Middle Voice), lit., &#8220;(ye rejoice, chairo) exulting.&#8221; Cp.
