At the age of seventeen, however, he became a dissenter, and at once prepared for the ministry. In 1799 he was settled over a Calvinistic congregation in Kendal, Westmoreland, but he resigned this charge in 1810, and, with about one third of his congregation, joined the Unitarians, and two years later became pastor of a Unitarian church at Hindley, Lancashire. In 1821 he emigrated to this country, but never again took active work.
