It was in the mountains of Judah, not the usual habitat of palms, rather it was the Canaanite center of religious teaching (Jos 15:49) KIRJATH SANNAH or KIRJATH SEPHER, “city of a book.” Joshua took it and slew its king and inhabitants (Jos 10:38-39; Jos 12:13). It was then called also Debir (an inner place, namely, among the mountains) in the center of Judah, not the Debit on the N.E. frontier (Jos 15:7; Jos 15:15-16; Jos 11:21;Jos_ 21:15; Jdg 1:11-12). Assigned to the priests.
