Before his election he was prothonotary apostolic, papal secretary, adviser to Cardinal Earnese, who was charged with the temporal power of the Church, Bishop of Nicastro, cardinal, Bishop of Reggio, Bishop of Gubbio, legate to Emperor Charles V and to the Council of Trent, and Vatican Librarian.
