He graduated from Trinity College in 1805, and became a fellow in 1808. He studied law at first, was called to the Irish bar, then took holy orders; in 1816 was elected professor of oratory by competitive examination: became senior fellow in 1836; bursar for many years, and in 1852 was appointed provost, which office he held till his death, January 24, 1867. Dr. McDonnell&#8217;s administration of fifteen years was marked by improvements in the undergraduate course, and by a great advance in the status of the college.
