He entered a commercial house in Liverpool, and during the Tractarian movement joined the Catholic Church. He accompanied bishop O&#8217;Connor of Pittsburgh to  America, and entered Mount St. Mary&#8217;s Seminary, where he graduated. He was ordained priest at Loretto, Pennsylvania, by bishop O&#8217;Connor, August 15, 1854. He returned to Mount St. Mary&#8217;s, became professor of theology and moral philosophy, afterwards director of the seminary, was vice- president from 1873 to 1875, and was a hard worker to the day of his death, which took place at the seminary, Emmittsburg, Maryland, January 20, 1880. Dr. McMurdie had a mind which saw through the most abstract questions. He had a marvellous command of English, and was a fine preacher. See (N.Y.)
