Born Santander, Spain, 3 November  1856; died there, 2 May  1912. Educated at the University of Barcelona, he taught literature at the University of Madrid, 1878, and was admitted to the Spanish Academy, 1881. Author of &#8220;Estudios criticos sobre poetas Montafienses,&#8221; and &#8220;Heterodoxes Espanoles,&#8221; a political and literary history of Spain in relation to the Catholic Church , from the time of Priscillian to the end of the 19th century .
