He was educated at Baliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1825; was fellow and tutor in his college; public examiner in the University in 1830, 1833-35; select preacher, 1833, 1858, 1863; head master of Winchester College, 1835-66; rector of Brightstone, Isle of Wight, 1866-69; fellow of Winchester College, 1866-70; Bampton lecturer, 1868; canon of Chester, 1868-69; consecrated bishop in 1869, and died July 6, 1885.
