This theory was first proposed by Darwin and is based on the following principles: overproduction of organisms and the consequent struggle for existence; the variations of organisms, useful and harmful, and the preservation of the useful, and destruction of the harmful; overcrowding; accidental destruction; change of habits; and migration. This theory is also termed the survival of the fittest (Herbert Spencer). It has not been established by fact, and is not now advanced even as a hypothesis to explain the origin of species.

Fuente: New Catholic Dictionary

Natural Selection

This is the corner stone of the evolutionary hypothesis of Charles Darwin. He found great variation in and among types as a result of his extensive biological investigations and accounted for the modifications, not bvysome act of special creation or supernatural intervention, but by the descent, generation after generation, of modified species selected to survive and reproduce the more useful and the more successfully adapted to the environmental struggle for existence. He elaborated a corollary to this general theory in his idea of sexual selection.
