In metaphysics, the Supreme Idea (Plato), the absolute first principle (Neo-platonism), the universe (Parmenides), Being as such and divine in nature (Plotinus), God (Nicolaus Cusanus), the soul (Lotze). Religious philosophy and mysticism, beginning with Indian philosophy (s.v.), has favored the designation of the One for the metaphysical world-ground, the ultimate icility, the world-soul, the principle of the world conceived as reason, nous, or more personally. The One may be conceived as an independent whole or as a sum, as analytic or synthetic, as principle or ontologically. Except by mysticism, it is rarely declared a fact of sensory experience, while its transcendent or transcendental, abstract nature is stressed, e.g., in epistemology where the &#8220;I&#8221; or self is considered the unitary background of personal experience, the identity of self-consciousness, or the unity of consciousness in the synthesis of the manifoldness of ideas (Kant). &#8212; K.F.L.<\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: The Dictionary of Philosophy<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n<h2>One<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> the first cardinal numeral, masculine (feminine and neuter nominative forms are mia and hen, respectively), is used to signify (1) (a) &#8220;one&#8221; in contrast to many, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 25:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 5:18<\/span>, RV, &#8220;(through) one (trespass),&#8221; i.e., Adam&#8217;s transgression, in contrast to the &#8220;one act of righteousness,&#8221; i.e., the death of Christ (not as AV, &#8220;the offense of one,&#8221; and &#8220;the righteousness of one&#8221;); (b) metaphorically, &#8220;union&#8221; and &#8220;concord,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Joh 10:30<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 11:52<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 17:11<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Joh 17:21-22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 12:4-5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 1:27<\/span>; (2) emphatically, (a) a single (&#8220;one&#8221;), to the exclusion of others, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 21:24<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 3:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 9:24<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 2:5<\/span> (twice); (b) &#8220;one, alone,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mar 2:7<\/span>, RV (AV, &#8220;only&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Mar 10:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 18:19<\/span>; (c) &#8220;one and the same,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Rom 3:30<\/span>, RV, &#8220;God is one,&#8221; i.e., there is not &#8220;one&#8221; God for the Jew and one for the Gentile; cp. <span class='bible'>Gal 3:20<\/span>, which means that in a promise there is no other party; <span class='bible'>1Co 3:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 11:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 12:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 5:8<\/span> (lit., &#8220;and the three are into one,&#8221; i.e., united in &#8220;one&#8221; and the same witness); (3) a certain &#8220;one,&#8221; in the same sense as the indefinite pronoun tis (see B, No. 1), e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 8:19<\/span>, RV, &#8220;a (scribe),&#8221; marg., &#8220;one (scribe),&#8221; AV, &#8220;a certain (scribe);&#8221; <span class='bible'>Mat 19:16<\/span>, &#8220;one;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rev 8:13<\/span>, RV marg., &#8220;one (eagle);&#8221; heis tis are used together in <span class='bible'>Luk 22:50<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 11:49<\/span>; this occurs frequently in the papyri (Moulton, Prol., p. 96); (4) distributively, with hekastos, &#8220;each,&#8221; i.e., &#8220;every one,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Luk 4:40<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 2:6<\/span>, &#8220;every man&#8221; (lit., &#8220;every one&#8221;); in the sense of &#8220;one &#8230; and one,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Joh 20:12<\/span>; or &#8220;one &#8230;&#8221; followed by allos or heteros, &#8220;the other,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 6:24<\/span>; or by a second heis, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 24:40<\/span>, RV, &#8220;one;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Joh 20:12<\/span>; in <span class='bible'>Rom 12:5<\/span> heis is preceded by kata (kath&#8217;) in the sense of &#8220;severally (members) one (of another),&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;every one &#8230; one&#8221;); cp. <span class='bible'>Mar 14:19<\/span>; in <span class='bible'>1Th 5:11<\/span> the phrase in the 2nd part, &#8220;each other,&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;one another&#8221;), is, lit., &#8220;one the one;&#8221; (5) as an ordinal number, equivalent to protos, &#8220;first,&#8221; in the phrase &#8220;the first day of the week,&#8221; lit., and idiomatically, &#8220;one of sabbaths,&#8221; signifying &#8220;the first day after the sabbath,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 28:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 16:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 20:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 16:2<\/span>. Moulton remarks on the tendency for certain cardinal numerals to replace ordinals (Prol., p. 96). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> an indefinite pronoun signifying &#8220;a certain one, some one, any one, one&#8221; (the neuter form ti denotes &#8220;a certain thing&#8221;), is used (a) like a noun, e.g., <span class='bible'>Act 5:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 19:32<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 21:34<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 3:4<\/span>; or with the meaning &#8220;someone,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Act 8:31<\/span>, RV, &#8220;some one&#8221; (AV, &#8220;some man&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Rom 5:7<\/span>; (b) as an adjective; see CERTAIN, Note (3), SOME. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> as a relative pronoun, signifies &#8220;who;&#8221; as a demonstrative pronoun, &#8220;this,&#8221; or &#8220;the one&#8221; in contrast with &#8220;the other,&#8221; or &#8220;another,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Rom 14:2<\/span>, AV (RV, &#8220;one man&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Co 12:8<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p> Notes: (1) The RV often substitutes &#8220;one&#8221; for &#8220;man,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 17:8<\/span> (oudeis, &#8220;no one&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Co 3:21<\/span> (i.e., &#8220;no person&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Co 15:35<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Th 5:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Ti 4:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 2:27<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 3:3<\/span>. (6) In <span class='bible'>Mar 9:26<\/span> nekros, &#8220;dead,&#8221; is translated &#8220;one dead.&#8221; (7) In <span class='bible'>Act 2:1<\/span> &#8220;in one place&#8221; translates epi to auto, lit., &#8220;to the same,&#8221; which may mean &#8220;for the same (purpose);&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 11:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 14:23<\/span>, the RV translates it &#8220;together.&#8221; (8) In <span class='bible'>Mar 1:7<\/span>, AV, the article ho, &#8220;the,&#8221; is rendered &#8220;one&#8221; (RV, &#8220;he that&#8221;). (9) In <span class='bible'>Mar 7:14<\/span>, AV, the plural of pas, &#8220;all&#8221; (so RV), is translated &#8220;every one;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Mat 5:28<\/span>, AV, pas, with the article, is translated &#8220;whosoever&#8221; (RV &#8220;every one who&#8221;). This is true even after the family enlarges. It is still one family.<\/p>\n<p>Num 15:16 (a) Although Israel had many laws, GOD considers all of it as just one law.<\/p>\n<p>Deu 6:4 (a) This passage may be easily understood when we remember that it refers to the heavenly family of three, or the heavenly firm of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We refer to a bank as one bank, though many men operate it. We refer to one family though there may be six members in it. The passage does not speak of &#8220;one person.&#8221; It does speak of one Lord. The three Persons of the Trinity operate together. What is done by anyone of the three Persons is agreed to by the others, and is binding on the others. It is one authority, though there are three Persons exercising that authority. These three members of the Godhead are not one Person, but they are one in plan, program, and purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Joh 10:30 (a) We all know that these two persons are just one person, for we read that the Father sent the Son. In another place, the Father spoke from Heaven concerning His Son on the earth. In another place the Son said &#8220;I ascend unto My Father.&#8221; He was telling us that they are one in purpose, one in plan, and one in action. (See Joh 17:21).<\/p>\n<p>Act 28:25 (a) Although Paul said that he spoke &#8220;one word,&#8221; or rather Luke said it in this passage, the writer mentioned a great many words that Paul spoke. He was indicating that there was one message for the people, one story to tell, one explanation given.<\/p>\n<p>Gal 3:28 (a) The church consists of many persons, yet in GOD&#8217;s sight it is just one group, one church, one family, one kingdom. It is not necessary to give the many other references in which the number one represents a group, or a bunch, or a collection, or more than one. From the numerical standpoint the number one represents indivisibility. One cannot be divided. One is not subject to separation.
