It describes (a) harmonious relationships between men, <span class='bible'>Mat 10:34<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 14:19<\/span>; (b) between nations, <span class='bible'>Luk 14:32<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 12:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 6:4<\/span>; (c) friendliness, <span class='bible'>Act 15:33<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 16:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 11:31<\/span>; (d) freedom from molestation, <span class='bible'>Luk 11:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 19:42<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 9:31<\/span> (RV, &#8216;peace,&#8217; AV, &#8216;rest&#8217;); <span class='bible'>Act 16:36<\/span>; (e) order, in the State, <span class='bible'>Act 24:2<\/span> (RV, &#8216;peace,&#8217; AV, &#8216;quietness&#8217;); in the churches, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:33<\/span>; (f) the harmonized relationships between God and man, accomplished through the gospel, <span class='bible'>Act 10:36<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eph 2:17<\/span>; (g) the sense of rest and contentment consequent thereon, <span class='bible'>Mat 10:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 5:34<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 1:79<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 2:29<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 14:27<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 1:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 3:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 8:6<\/span>; in certain passages this idea is not distinguishable from the last, <span class='bible'>Rom 5:1<\/span>.&#8221; * [* From Notes on Thessalonians by Hogg and Vine, p. 154.] <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;The God of peace&#8221; is a title used in <span class='bible'>Rom 15:33<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 16:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 4:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Th 5:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 13:20<\/span>; cp. <span class='bible'>1Co 14:33<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 13:11<\/span>. The corresponding Heb. word shalom primarily signifies &#8220;wholeness:&#8221; see its use in <span class='bible'>Jos 8:31<\/span>, &#8220;unhewn;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rth 2:12<\/span>, &#8220;full;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Neh 6:15<\/span>, &#8220;finished;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Isa 42:19<\/span>, marg., &#8220;made perfect.&#8221; Hence there is a close connection between the title in <span class='bible'>1Th 5:23<\/span> and the word holokleros, &#8220;entire,&#8221; in that verse. In the Sept. shalom is often rendered by soteria, &#8220;salvation, e.g., <span class='bible'>Gen 26:31<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gen 41:16<\/span>; hence the &#8220;peace-offering&#8221; is called the &#8220;salvation offering.&#8221; Cp. <span class='bible'>Luk 7:50<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 8:48<\/span>. In <span class='bible'>2Th 3:16<\/span>, the title &#8220;the Lord of peace&#8221; is best understood as referring to the Lord Jesus. In <span class='bible'>Act 7:26<\/span>, &#8220;would have set them at one&#8221; is, lit., &#8220;was reconciling them (conative imperfect tense, expressing an earnest effort) into peace.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> primarily, &#8220;to bring to peace, reconcile,&#8221; denotes in the NT, &#8220;to keep peace or to be at peace:&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Mar 9:50<\/span>, RV, the Lord bids the disciples &#8220;be at peace&#8221; with one another, gently rebuking their ambitious desires; in <span class='bible'>Rom 12:18<\/span> (RV, &#8220;be at peace,&#8221; AV, &#8220;live peaceably&#8221;) the limitation &#8220;if it be possible, as much as in you lieth,&#8221; seems due to the phrase &#8220;with all men,&#8221; but is not intended to excuse any evasion of the obligation imposed by the command; in <span class='bible'>2Co 13:11<\/span> it is rendered &#8220;live in peace,&#8221; a general exhortation to believers; in <span class='bible'>1Th 5:13<\/span>, &#8220;be at peace (among yourselves).&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to make peace&#8221; (eirene, and poieo, &#8220;to make&#8221;), is used in <span class='bible'>Col 1:20<\/span>.
