Pine. An evergreen tree of uncertain identity. Biblical scholars believe pine refers to either the Brutian or the Aleppo pine ( Isa 41:19; Isa 60:13). The Brutian pine grew to a height of about 9 to 11 meters (30-35 feet). It is smaller and has longer needles than the Aleppo pine, which grew to a height of about 27 meters (90 feet). Both trees grew in Lebanon and in Palestine.<\/p>\n
Bible scholars are not agreed on the identity of the many evergreens mentioned in the Bible. Other trees suggested for these references are the ash, fir, cypress, cedar, or juniper.<\/p>\n
tidhar, from dahar “to revolve”. Gesenius makes the oak, implying “duration”. The shemen, in Neh 8:15 is rather the olive or oil tree, as in Isa 41:19.<\/p>\n
