With reference to the Gospel the phrase &#8220;to bring, or declare, good, or glad, tidings&#8221; is used in <span class='bible'>Act 13:32<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 10:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 4:2<\/span>. In <span class='bible'>Luk 4:18<\/span> the RV &#8220;to preach good tidings&#8221; gives the correct quotation from Isaiah, rather than the AV &#8220;to preach the Gospel.&#8221; In the Sept. the verb is used of any message intended to cheer the hearers, e.g. <span class='bible'>1Sa 31:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Sa 1:20<\/span>. See GOSPEL, B, No. 1. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies (a) &#8220;to be a herald,&#8221; or, in general, &#8220;to proclaim,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 3:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 1:45<\/span>, &#8220;publish;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Luk 4:18<\/span>, RV, &#8220;to proclaim,&#8221; AV, &#8220;to preach;&#8221; so <span class='bible'>Luk 4:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 12:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 10:37<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 2:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 5:2<\/span>. In <span class='bible'>1Pe 3:19<\/span> the probable reference is, not to glad tidings (which there is no real evidence that Noah preached, nor is there evidence that the spirits of antediluvian people are actually &#8220;in prison&#8221;), but to the act of Christ after His resurrection in proclaiming His victory to fallen angelic spirits; (b) &#8220;to preach the Gospel as a herald,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 24:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 13:10<\/span>, RV, &#8220;be preached&#8221; (AV, &#8220;be published&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Mar 14:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 16:15<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mar 16:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 8:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 9:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 24:47<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 8:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 19:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 28:31<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 10:14<\/span>, present participle, lit., &#8220;(one) preaching,&#8221; &#8220;a preacher;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rom 10:15<\/span> (1st part); <span class='bible'>1Co 1:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 15:11-12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 1:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 4:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 11:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gal 2:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phi 1:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Col 1:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Th 2:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:16<\/span>; (c) &#8220;to preach the word,&#8221; <span class='bible'>2Ti 4:2<\/span> (of the ministry of the Scriptures, with special reference to the Gospel). See PROCLAIM, PUBLISH. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> see GOSPEL, B, No. 2. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit., &#8220;to proclaim as a herald&#8221; (pro, before, and No. 2), is used in <span class='bible'>Act 13:24<\/span>, &#8220;had first preached.&#8221; Some mss. have the verb in <span class='bible'>Act 3:20<\/span>; for the best see APPOINT, No. 12. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to be bold in speech,&#8221; is translated &#8220;to preach boldly&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Act 9:27<\/span> (2nd part); in <span class='bible'>Act 9:29<\/span>, RV (AV, &#8220;he spake boldly&#8221;).
