{"id":78161,"date":"2022-09-29T08:18:48","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/quench-unquenchable\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T08:18:48","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:18:48","slug":"quench-unquenchable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/quench-unquenchable\/","title":{"rendered":"Quench, Unquenchable"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Quench, Unquenchable<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> is used (a) of &#8220;quenching&#8221; fire or things on fire, <span class='bible'>Mat 12:20<\/span>, quoted from <span class='bible'>Isa 42:3<\/span>, figurative of the condition of the feeble; <span class='bible'>Heb 11:34<\/span>; in the Passive Voice, <span class='bible'>Mat 25:8<\/span>, of torches (see LAMP), RV, &#8220;are going out,&#8221; lit., &#8220;are being quenched;&#8221; of the retributive doom hereafter of sin unrepented of and unremitted in this life, <span class='bible'>Mar 9:48<\/span> (in some mss. in <span class='bible'>Mar 9:44<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mar 9:46<\/span>); (b) metaphorically, of &#8220;quenching&#8221; the fire-tipped darts of the evil one, <span class='bible'>Eph 6:16<\/span>; of &#8220;quenching&#8221; the Spirit, by hindering His operations in oral testimony in the church gatherings of believers, <span class='bible'>1Th 5:19<\/span>. &#8220;The peace, order, and edification of the saints were evidence of the ministry of the Spirit among them, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:26<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:32-33<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 14:40<\/span>, but if, through ignorance of His ways, or through failure to recognize, or refusal to submit to, them, or through impatience with the ignorance or self-will of others, the Spirit were quenched, these happy results would be absent. For there was always the danger that the impulses of the flesh might usurp the place of the energy of the Spirit in the assembly, and the endeavor to restrain this evil by natural means would have the effect of hindering His ministry also.
