{"id":78892,"date":"2022-09-29T08:41:45","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/reckon-reckoning\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T08:41:45","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:41:45","slug":"reckon-reckoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/reckon-reckoning\/","title":{"rendered":"Reckon, Reckoning"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Reckon, Reckoning<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> is properly used (a) of &#8220;numerical calculation,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Luk 22:37<\/span>; (b) metaphorically, &#8220;by a reckoning of characteristics or reasons, to take into account,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rom 2:26<\/span>, &#8220;shall &#8230; be reckoned,&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;counted&#8221;), of &#8220;reckoning&#8221; uncircumcision for circumcision by God&#8217;s estimate in contrast to that of the Jew regarding his own condition (<span class='bible'>Rom 2:3<\/span>); in <span class='bible'>Rom 4:3<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Rom 4:5-6<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Rom 4:9<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Rom 4:11<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Rom 4:22-24<\/span>, of &#8220;reckoning&#8221; faith for righteousness, or &#8220;reckoning&#8221; righteousness to persons, in all of which the RV uses the verb &#8220;to reckon&#8221; instead of the AV &#8220;to count or to impute;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 4:4<\/span> the subject is treated by way of contrast between grace and debt, which latter involves the &#8220;reckoning&#8221; of a reward for works; what is owed as a debt cannot be &#8220;reckoned&#8221; as a favor, but the faith of Abraham and his spiritual children sets them outside the category of those who seek to be justified by self-effort, and, vice versa, the latter are excluded from the grace of righteousness bestowed on the sole condition of faith; so in <span class='bible'>Gal 3:6<\/span> (RV, &#8220;was reckoned,&#8221; AV, &#8220;was accounted&#8221;); since Abraham, like all the natural descendants of Adam, was a sinner, he was destitute of righteousness in the sight of God; if, then, his relationship with God was to be rectified (i.e., if he was to be justified before God), the rectification could not be brought about by works of merit on his part; in <span class='bible'>Jam 2:23<\/span>, RV, &#8220;reckoned,&#8221; the subject is viewed from a different standpoint (see under JUSTIFICATION, B, last four paragraphs); for other instances of &#8220;reckoning&#8221; in this respect see <span class='bible'>Rom 9:8<\/span>, RV, &#8220;are reckoned&#8221; (AV, &#8220;are counted&#8221;); <span class='bible'>2Co 5:19<\/span>, RV, &#8220;(not) reckoning (trespasses),&#8221; AV, &#8220;imputing;&#8221; (c) &#8220;to consider, calculate,&#8221; translated &#8220;to reckon&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 6:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 8:36<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 10:11<\/span>, RV, &#8220;let (such a one) reckon (this),&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;thinkest&#8221;); <span class='bible'>2Co 3:28<\/span> (AV, &#8220;we conclude&#8221;); <span class='bible'>2Co 8:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 11:5<\/span> (AV, &#8220;I suppose&#8221;); see ACCOUNT, A, No. 4, CONSIDER, No. 6, COUNT, No. 3, SUPPOSE: (e) &#8220;to purpose, decide,&#8221; <span class='bible'>2Co 10:2<\/span>, RV, &#8220;count&#8221; (AV, &#8220;think&#8221;); see COUNT, No. 3. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to say, speak,&#8221; also has the meaning &#8220;to gather, reckon, account,&#8221; used in this sense in <span class='bible'>Heb 7:11<\/span>, RV, &#8220;be reckoned&#8221; (AV, &#8220;be called&#8221;). See ASK, A, No. 6. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to take up together&#8221; (sun, &#8220;with,&#8221; airo, &#8220;to take&#8221;), is used with the noun logos, &#8220;an account,&#8221; signifying &#8220;to settle account,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Mat 18:23<\/span>, RV, &#8220;make a reckoning&#8221; (AV, &#8220;take account&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Mat 18:24<\/span>, AV and RV, &#8220;to reckon&#8221; (logos being understood); <span class='bible'>Mat 25:19<\/span>, RV, &#8220;maketh a reckoning&#8221; (AV, &#8220;reckoneth&#8221;). This phrase occurs not infrequently in the papyri in the sense of settling accounts (see Deissmann, Light from the Ancient East, 118).
