See RECOMPENSE, B, No. 1, RENDER, No. 2. <\/p>\n<p>  signifying &#8220;to pay off&#8221; (apo, &#8220;off,&#8221; tino, &#8220;to pay a fine&#8221;), is used in <span class='bible'>Phm 1:19<\/span>, of Paul&#8217;s promise to &#8220;repay&#8221; whatever Onesimus owed Philemon, or to whatever extent the runaway slave had wronged his master. The verb is very common in the papyri, e.g., in a contract of apprenticeship the father has to pay a forfeit for each day of the son&#8217;s absence from work.
