{"id":79428,"date":"2022-09-29T08:57:57","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/reputation-repute\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T08:57:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T13:57:57","slug":"reputation-repute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/reputation-repute\/","title":{"rendered":"Reputation, Repute"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Reputation, Repute<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies (a) &#8220;to be of opinion&#8221; (akin to doxa, &#8220;an opinion&#8221;), &#8220;to suppose,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Luk 12:51<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 13:2<\/span> (see SUPPOSE); (b) &#8220;to seem, to be reputed;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Gal 2:2<\/span>, RV, &#8220;who were of repute&#8221; (AV, &#8220;which were of reputation&#8221;); in <span class='bible'>Gal 2:6<\/span> (twice), <span class='bible'>Gal 2:9<\/span>, RV, &#8220;were reputed&#8221; and &#8220;were of repute&#8221; (AV, &#8220;seemed&#8221;); in each case the present participle of the verb with the article is used, lit., &#8220;(well) thought of&#8221; by them, persons held in consideration; in <span class='bible'>Gal 2:6<\/span>, RV, &#8220;(those) who were reputed to be somewhat&#8221; (AV, &#8220;who seemed to be somewhat&#8221;); so <span class='bible'>Gal 2:9<\/span>, where there is no irony [cp. the rendering &#8220;are accounted&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Mar 10:42<\/span> (i.e., not rulers nominally)], Paul recognized that James, Cephas, and John were, as they were &#8220;reputed&#8221; by the church at Jerusalem, its responsible guides; (c) impersonally, &#8220;to think, to seem good.&#8221; See SEEM and THINK. <\/p>\n<p> The first meaning, &#8220;to suppose,&#8221; implies a subjective opinion based on thought; the second meaning, exemplified in the Galatians passages, expresses, from the standpoint of the observer, his own judgment about a matter (Trench, Syn., lxxx). <\/p>\n<p> Notes: (1) In <span class='bible'>Act 5:34<\/span>, AV, timios, &#8220;honored, had in honor&#8221; (RV), is translated &#8220;had in reputation.&#8221; (2) In <span class='bible'>Phi 2:29<\/span>, AV, entimos, &#8220;honorable,&#8221; with echo, &#8220;to have,&#8221; i.e., &#8220;to hold in honor,&#8221; is translated &#8220;hold &#8230; in reputation&#8221; (RV, &#8220;hold &#8230; in honor&#8221;).
