He graduated from Colby University in 1854, and from the Newton Theological Institution in 1858; was pastor at Limerick, Maine, one year; missionary to China from 1859 to 1861, pastor at San Francisco, California, in 1862; at Chelsea from 1877 until his death, November 22, 1885. He wrote frequently for the religious journals, also a volume entitled Things to Think of.
