(Heb. yam), signifies (1<\/strong>) “the gathering together of the waters,” the ocean (Gen. 1:10<\/span>); (2<\/strong>) a river, as the Nile (Isa. 19:5<\/span>), the Euphrates (Isa. 21:1<\/span>; Jer. 51:36<\/span>); (3<\/strong>) the Red Sea (Ex. 14:16<\/span>, 27<\/span>; 15:4<\/span>, etc.); (4<\/strong>) the Mediterranean (Ex. 23:31<\/span>; Num. 34:6<\/span>, 7<\/span>; Josh. 15:47<\/span>; Ps. 80:11<\/span>, etc.); (5<\/strong>) the “sea of Galilee,” an inland fresh-water lake, and (6<\/strong>) the Dead Sea or “salt sea” (Gen. 14:3<\/span>; Num. 34:3<\/span>, 12<\/span>, etc.). The word “sea” is used symbolically in Isa. 60:5<\/span>, where it probably means the nations around the Mediterranean.
