Sophar), given in the A.V. as one of the fortified towns on the east of Jordan which were taken possession of and rebuilt by the tribe of Gad (Num 32:35); but probably a mere affix (significant, according to some, of bareness) to the second Atroth, to distinguish it from the former one, not an independent place. This word should probably be joined with the word preceding it in this passage, Atroth-Shophan, as in the Revised Version.<\/p>\n A fortified town E. of Jordan, rebuilt by Gad (Num 32:35).
