Suppressed in 1792, the congregation was re-established after the French Revolution. The American province of the Sisters of Divine Providence of Saint-Jean-de-Bassel was founded in 1889 at Covington, Kentucky by three sisters of the general mother-house at Saint-Jean-de-Bassel, for the Christian education of youth in America.
