He graduated from Williams College in 1853 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1856; was ordained pastor of the South  Street Church, Philadelphia, in 1858; resigned this charge in 1864 to become pastor of the Northminster Church, West Philadelphia, where he continued eighteen years, until ill-health compelled him to relinquish his work. He died there, March 7, 1883. Dr. Smith was an able, scholarly, eloquent divine, and his labors were attended with success.
