He helped found the Holy Family Confraternity, became consultor general of his congregation , Bishop  of Namur, 1865 , Archbishop  of Mechlin and primate, 1875 . He took part in organizing the papal zouaves and induced General Lamoriciere to offer his services to Pius IX.
