{"id":94892,"date":"2022-09-29T17:57:05","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T22:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/write-wrote-written\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T17:57:05","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T22:57:05","slug":"write-wrote-written","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/write-wrote-written\/","title":{"rendered":"Write, Wrote, Written"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Write, Wrote, Written<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> is used (a) of &#8220;forming letters&#8221; on a surface or writing material, <span class='bible'>Joh 8:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gal 6:11<\/span>, where the Apostle speaks of his having &#8220;written&#8221; with large letters in his own hand, which not improbably means that at this point he took the pen from his amanuensis and finished the Epistle himself; this is not negatived by the fact that the verb is in the aorist or past definite tense, lit., &#8220;I wrote,&#8221; for in Greek idiom the writer of a letter put himself beside the reader and spoke of it as having been &#8220;written&#8221; in the past; in Eng. we should say &#8220;I am writing,&#8221; taking our point of view from the time at which we are doing it; cp. <span class='bible'>Phm 1:19<\/span> (this Ep. is undoubtedly a holograph), where again the equivalent English translation is in the present tense (see also <span class='bible'>Act 15:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 15:15<\/span>); possibly the Apostle, in Galatians, was referring to his having &#8220;written&#8221; the body of the Epistle but the former alternative seems the more likely; in <span class='bible'>2Th 3:17<\/span> he says that the closing salutation is written by his own hand and speaks of it as &#8220;the token in every Epistle&#8221; which some understand as a purpose for the future rather than a custom; see, however, <span class='bible'>1Co 16:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Col 4:18<\/span>. The absence of the token from the other Epistles of Paul can be explained differently, their authenticity not being dependent upon this; (b) &#8220;to commit to writing, to record,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Luk 1:63<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 19:21-22<\/span>; it is used of Scripture as a standing authority, &#8220;it is written,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mar 1:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 1:17<\/span> (cp. <span class='bible'>2Co 4:13<\/span>); (c) of &#8220;writing directions or giving information,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Rom 10:5<\/span>, &#8220;(Moses) writeth,&#8221; RV (AV, &#8220;describeth&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Rom 15:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 7:12<\/span>; (d) of &#8220;that which contained a record or message,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mar 10:4-5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 19:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 21:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 23:25<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;to send a message by letter, to write word&#8221; (stello, &#8220;to send;&#8221; Eng., &#8220;epistle&#8221;), <span class='bible'>Act 15:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 21:25<\/span> (some mss. have apostello, &#8220;to send&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Heb 13:22<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;to write before,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rom 15:4<\/span> (in the best texts; some have grapho); <span class='bible'>Eph 3:3<\/span>. See SET (forth). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;to write in,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Luk 10:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 3:2-3<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> is rendered &#8220;to write over or upon&#8221; (epi) in <span class='bible'>Mar 15:26<\/span>; figuratively, on the heart, <span class='bible'>Heb 8:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 10:16<\/span>; on the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem, <span class='bible'>Rev 21:12<\/span>.
