The symbols and predictions in Luke 21:25–28 are usually interpreted by scholars today as having to do with the return of our Lord, though some have argued that they are better interpreted as symbols of the spread of the Gospel into all the world after the destruction of Jerusalem.

What is noteworthy regarding the predictions of Jesus’ return is that they are not nearly as specific as those relating to the destruction of Jerusalem. When Jesus talks about the end times, He gives general signs: there are always nations in anguish, always “tossings of the sea,” always people fainting with fear, etc. It is reasonable to assume, though, that Jesus’ predictions imply there will be an increase of such distresses just before the end.

But how can we know that the distresses of our day are proof of the end of the age? Our distresses may be worse, or seem worse to us, but they may not be as bad as something coming in the future. I’ve never been one to speculate about current events in this regard. I don’t know if Jesus is coming back in the twentieth century, or in the twenty-first, or in the forty-fifth. I do know that He is coming because we have an absolute guarantee of that, and I know that there are reasons in our own day to be alert to the possibility that He may return soon.

When such tribulations come in history, men are faint with fear. They fear the coming of the Judge of heaven and earth, and such events call His coming to mind. Jesus went on to say that when Christians see such distresses, they should not be afraid, but should be confident because they are signs that their “redemption” is drawing near.

CORAM DEO

Jeremiah 49–50

Hebrews 4

Sometimes we get sidetracked trying to predict the future from current events. Jesus’ words focus on the practical benefit of taking note of current events: they force us to think seriously about God. Perhaps more importantly they also force the unbeliever to think. Keep up with current events in the hope that you will be able to use your knowledge in conversations with unconverted people.

For further study: 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12; Revelation 6:12–17; tape #B57INT.86/87

friday

november

LUKE 21:23–25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars.
