It seems that the day the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed, Jesus took Peter and John aside and told them to make arrangements for the meal. Their response was to ask where Jesus wanted it to be. Jesus told them to look for a man carrying a jar of water and to follow him to the place Jesus had previously selected.

When Peter and John arrived at the house, they were to tell its owner that the Master was coming, and the owner would show them an upper room already furnished for Passover. Some have suggested that this was the house of John Mark’s parents, but we cannot be sure (compare Acts 12:12).

Why this secrecy? Although the Bible does not tell us expressly why Jesus did this, we can draw an inference from the context that makes it fairly clear. Luke has just told us that Judas made arrangements to betray Jesus. Luke 22:6 tells us it was necessary for this betrayal to be accomplished privately, away from the crowds that still favored Jesus. What better occasion than the privacy of the Passover meal when the streets of Jerusalem were deserted? Thus, knowing what Judas planned and in order to conceal His intentions from Judas and from any other spies, Jesus made His preparations quietly. Jesus had a profound desire to celebrate the Passover undisturbed with His disciples (v. 15), and He also had no intention of allowing Himself to be captured until He was ready for it.

When the hour came, Jesus and His disciples reclined to partake of the Passover meal. There must have been one very frustrated disciple present, whom Jesus kept near to Him to prevent him from running and telling the enemy where He was (compare John 13:26). In this way Jesus maneuvered Judas into delaying his act of betrayal.

CORAM DEO

Ezekiel 24–26

James 3

The preparations for the Passover meal, which occupied Peter and John all afternoon, represented spiritual preparations to receive God’s gift.
