The Roman Catholic Church says the “substances” of the elements are transformed into real flesh and blood, while the outward appearances remain that of bread and wine. Martin Luther held that the real flesh and blood of Jesus are miraculously added to the bread and wine. The Reformed churches believe that nothing happens to the physical nature of the bread and wine, but they symbolize the body and blood of Jesus.

The Roman Catholic and Lutheran views are based on their interpretation of the verb is in Jesus’ statement: “This is my body.” The Reformed view is that is here means represents: “This represents My body.” Throughout the Gospels. Jesus frequently uses the verb to be in this way: I am the Door, I am the Vine, etc. Jesus is not literally a door or a vine, and the bread and wine are not literally the flesh and blood of Jesus. A second argument arises from the biblical prohibition on drinking blood. If the blood of Christ was literally present in the wine, the Lord’s Supper would violate the law of God. If the apostles had understood Jesus literally, we would expect a much more elaborate discussion of the matter in Acts 15. They would have had to distinguish between drinking Jesus’ literal blood and drinking the blood of animals.

The reaction of the Reformers against the Roman Catholic and Lutheran views was based on their Christology. If Jesus’ humanity is equally present all over the world at the same time, then His humanity has been merged with His deity. But the Council of Chalcedon, building on the Bible, said that each of the two natures of Christ retains its own attributes: The human body of Jesus cannot be omnipresent but resides in heaven. The Reformers felt any other position denied Christ’s true humanity.

CORAM DEO

Ezekiel 41–42

2 Peter 1

If Jesus really gives Himself to us in a special way in the Lord’s Supper, and if the Lord’s Supper is a second witness and seal on the Word of God, how often should we have it? Many Reformed theologians, including Calvin, favored weekly communion.
