{"id":11573,"date":"2016-08-17T01:29:20","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T06:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/wisdoms-moral-imperative\/"},"modified":"2016-08-17T01:29:20","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T06:29:20","slug":"wisdoms-moral-imperative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/wisdoms-moral-imperative\/","title":{"rendered":"WISDOM\u2019S MORAL IMPERATIVE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:center;line-height:normal'><b>PROVERBS 8<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:center;line-height:normal'><i>\u201cFor whoever finds me [wisdom] finds life and receives favor from the Lord\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:center;line-height:normal'><i>(Proverbs 8:35)<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Scholars often contrast the authority of the Law and prophets (\u201cThus says the Lord\u201d) with the \u201csanctified common sense\u201d of the proverbs (\u201cIt seems to me \u2026\u201d). Some even say that proverbs are suggestions which we are free to accept or reject (the grain of truth in this\u2014that we need wisdom to know when and how to apply a proverb\u2014does not disguise the lie).<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Proverbs 8 includes both an emphatic statement of proverbial authority, and one of the great invitations of the Bible (8:32\u201336). Wisdom gives four reasons for her demand that we choose life by listening to her and keeping her ways.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>(1) <i>Wisdom alone teaches truth.<\/i> Her words are true, noble, and right, never wicked, crooked, or perverse (8:5\u20139). They are therefore absolutely trustworthy. In our day and age what would we not give for advice that we could trust wholeheartedly (8:10\u201311)? Such trustworthy wisdom and advice too often lie neglected within our grasp in the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>(2) <i>Wisdom gives better rewards<\/i> than any other possible investment of time, effort, or energy: power, justice, riches, honor, wealth, and righteousness (8:12\u201321).<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>(3) <i>Wisdom alone knows the secrets of creation,<\/i> since, as the firstborn of all creation (8:22\u201324), she was there beside God as He worked (8:25\u201330a), and rejoiced in all that He made (8:30b-31). Who would not follow counsel based on perfect understanding of life?<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>(4) <i>Wisdom alone gives life.<\/i> Do we want to live or to die (8:35\u201336)? Will we mold our lives by the wisdom of the proverbs, or will we disregard their instruction? This appeals to our self-interest as nothing else does\u2014who wants to die?<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent: 18.0pt;line-height:normal'>Martin Luther allegedly said: \u201cThe greatest thing I can do for God is to believe Him.\u201d If I truly believe that the best thing for my car is to change the oil every 3,000 miles, then I will change it every 3,000 miles. If I truly believe that \u201cthe purposes of a man\u2019s heart are deep waters\u201d (20:5), then I will ask God to help me not judge by surface appearances but to give me understanding to draw out the wisdom hidden in the heart.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;   text-align:center;line-height:normal'><b>CORAM DEO<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;   text-align:center;line-height:normal'>Jeremiah 9\u201310<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;   text-align:center;line-height:normal'>1 Timothy 2\u20133<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-indent:   18.0pt;line-height:normal'>God has saved us from death to life. If wisdom is   indeed the way of life, then we have a moral obligation to live wisely\u2014to   fear the Lord\u2014by obeying the counsel which He so freely and lovingly gives in   the proverbs.
