The writer of Psalm 93 compares its powerful tide and captivating beauty to the majesty of God. Yet the mighty waves of the sea reflect only a fraction of the infinite glory of the Lord. His authority and majestic rule extend over all creation. Kings on earth acquire authority over certain regions of the earth, but God’s authority overshadows the entire universe. Nothing, no one, can compare with the infinite glory of God that shines through His righteous government of the world and His eternal power over His kingdom.

This psalm stirs up the spirit of praise by directing us to consider God’s majesty as it is manifested in His rule. As we begin to understand more deeply His infinite majesty, our humility grows. We are less likely to exalt ourselves when we keep in view our King’s power and majesty. Whenever we approach God in worship or in prayer, we should do so with the awe and reverence He is due. You would not approach an earthly king in a brash and common manner; therefore, do not swagger into the presence of the King of kings. Instead, come humbly with the understanding that His power is beyond anything you can imagine, and His majesty is more glorious than the pounding waves of the sea. God reveals His power in many ways—in the driving winds of a storm, in the violent upheavals of an earthquake, and in the mighty thrashings of the ocean. “God manifests His power in the sound of the floods, and in the tempestuous waves of the sea, in a way calculated to excite our reverential awe,” Calvin wrote.

Just as God’s power is revealed in creation, His holiness is revealed in His church. His Word and His statutes remain steadfast and eternal because He is from everlasting to everlasting. God’s salvation, His eternal covenant that brings life and holiness to His people, manifests His glory and majesty like nothing else. Our celebration, therefore, should include not only praise for His power in creation but thanksgiving for the salvation He has established among His people.

CORAM DEO

Psalms 53–55

Acts 27:27–44

Reflect on 1 Chronicles 29:10–13 and Psalm 93.
