The way through the wilderness to their inheritance produced many trials, through which God gave proof of His power and grace—for which the nation of Israel gave everlasting remembrance. They remembered how “Judah became His sanctuary, and Israel His dominion,” how they benefited from living in God’s very presence.

When God brings His people out of bondage, He rules over them in righteousness and truth. He cares for them, protects them, and sets Himself as King over them. His deliverances serve as pledges and symbols of His love, so these powerful deliverances should be frequently remembered. As the nation of Israel proclaimed in its worship the journal of deliverance from Egypt, so should all Christians remember God’s deliverance of their souls from bondage to sin. In remembering what you have been saved from—everlasting punishment in hell—you develop a greater sense of His love and mercy for you. In remembering His irresistible grace in bringing you into His kingdom, you become better equipped to serve Him as a subject in that kingdom. In remembering the gift of the Holy Spirit, you gain comfort in the face of temptations and trials. In remembering the price paid by Christ on Calvary, you increase your thankfulness at His throne of grace.

The Israelites praised God for coming into their midst, for ruling over them, for setting up His kingdom among them, and for exercising His sovereign reign over all the earth. During their journey in the wilderness, the Israelites witnessed many miracles—the parting of the Red Sea, the trembling of the mountains, the gushing of water from the rock. Each brought glory to God, declaring His power, His majesty, and His sovereignty throughout the world, and especially among His people. The same praise should be on the lips of every Christian when they consider the mighty ways God has delivered them, how He has set them on the right path, how He has given them peace and love in His glorious kingdom. May each one of us tremble at His presence as we consider His mighty works, His glorious power, and His eternal mercy.

CORAM DEO

Isaiah 19–21

Ephesians 2

WEEKEND

Isaiah 22–26

Ephesians 3–4

How often do you remember God’s goodness in your life, what He has saved you from, and what He has purchased for you?
