Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.” Solomon not only heeded David, but learned by his example to instruct his children in the ways of wisdom. No doubt Solomon’s earnest and honorable prayer for wisdom was born from the godly instruction David instilled in him.

Let every parent and every person associated with the family learn from David’s example and from Solomon’s words in this chapter. Instruct your children in the ways of God. What does this instruction entail? Solomon no doubt had many responsibilities, but because he loved his children and devoted his entire life to God, he took time to instruct his children with all the zeal and admonition he could muster. He taught his children “good doctrine,” imparting to them knowledge of God’s Word. How common it is for parents to leave the instruction of doctrine to the Sunday school teacher, youth pastor, or minister. While these people can certainly help, they should not replace parents, who are primarily responsible for teaching their children. Good teaching is often neglected because parents do not know sound doctrine. They do not study the Word enough themselves to impart it to their children. Yet we learn from this passage how necessary such instruction is for our children to be led along the path of wisdom.

This teaching of doctrine is not speculative concepts that fail to penetrate the heart. It is conscience-burning, life-changing doctrine that finds its outlet in every day life. Wisdom is practical knowledge that affects every area of life. It preserves us from bad decisions, from ungodly friends, and from deadly temptations.

Do not be a parent more concerned about your children’s earthly success than about their spiritual welfare. Follow the example of David and Solomon and teach your children the words of the Lord. Set a godly example, not only in your instruction of the Scriptures, but in your life, that your children might learn practical godliness as they follow in your footsteps along the path of wisdom.

CORAM DEO

Exodus 9–10

Matthew 18:1–20

If you have children, plot out a time every day this week to teach them something directly from the Scriptures.
