Mom\u2019s Survival Tips<\/b><\/p>\n
To my kids who have left home and are on their own, I pass on a list of life lessons:<\/p>\n
1. Don\u2019t sweat your every mistake or faux pas. They make up for the things you got away with that nobody knows about.<\/p>\n
2. Avoid marrying anyone who deliberately flushes the toilet when you\u2019re taking a shower.<\/p>\n
3. When someone tells you that what he\u2019s about to say is \u201cfor your own good,\u201d expect the worst.<\/p>\n
4. The value of a dog is its constant reminder of how much fun it is to be idiotic.<\/p>\n
5. If you are lavishly praised, enjoy the taste but don\u2019t swallow it whole.<\/p>\n
6. When a politician says, \u201cLet me make something perfectly clear,\u201d remember that he usually won\u2019t.<\/p>\n
7. Your children may leave home, but their stuff will be in your attic and basement forever.<\/p>\n
8. If someone says, \u201cI know what I mean, but I just can\u2019t put it into words,\u201d he doesn\u2019t know what he means.<\/p>\n
9. Two people cannot operate a TV remote control in the same room at the same time.<\/p>\n
10. Don\u2019t waste time trying to be your own best friend. You can\u2019t pat yourself on the back, and it\u2019s unsatisfying to cry on your own shoulder. Find a real friend instead.<\/p>\n

Knowing Where To Tinker<\/b><\/p>\n
Auto maker Henry Ford asked electrical genius Charlie Steinmetz to build the generators for his factory. One day the generators ground to a halt, and the repairmen couldn\u2019t find the problem. So Ford called Steinmetz, who tinkered with the machines for a few hours and then threw the switch. The generators whirred to life\u2014but Ford got a bill for $10,000 from Steinmetz. Flabbergasted, the rather tightfisted car maker inquired why the bill was so high.<\/p>\n
Steinmetz\u2019s reply: For tinkering with the generators, $10. For knowing where to tinker, $9,990.<\/p>\n
Ford paid the bill.<\/p>\n

Proud Young Man<\/b><\/p>\n
There\u2019s a story about a proud young man who came to Socrates asking for knowledge. He walked up to the muscular philosopher and said, \u201cO great Socrates, I come to you for knowledge.\u201d Socrates recognized a pompous numbskull when he saw one. He led the young man through the streets, to the sea, and chest deep into water. Then he asked, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d \u201cKnowledge, O wise Socrates,\u201d said the young man with a smile. Socrates put his strong hands on the man\u2019s shoulders and pushed him under. Thirty seconds later Socrates let him up. \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d he asked again. \u201cWisdom,\u201d the young man sputtered, \u201cO great and wise Socrates.\u201d Socrates crunched him under again. Thirty seconds passed, thirty-five. Forty. Socrates let him up. The man was gasping. \u201cWhat do you want, young man?\u201d Between heavy, heaving breaths the fellow wheezed, \u201cKnowledge, O wise and wonderful…\u201d Socrates jammed him under again Forty seconds passed. Fifty. \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d \u201cAir!\u201d he screeched. \u201cI need air!\u201d \u201cWhen you want knowledge as you have just wanted air, then you will have knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n
