And the strangest thing about the army was that the king insisted that young children should be admitted to it. His officers sometimes objected, but that did little good. \u201cThe children cannot carry muskets,\u201d said they. But the king answered this objection by furnishing them with powerful pistols.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cThey cannot march with the soldiers,\u201d insisted the officers. \u201cWell,\u201d answered the king, \u201cthen they shall have carriages and horses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cThey will not be able to stand the exposure,\u201d urged the officers. \u201cWhy,\u201d replied their master, \u201cwith all my soldiers to protect them, they will be in the safest place in the world for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cBut they will make many blunders, and our foes will laugh at us.\u201d \u201cThe enemy will not laugh,\u201d answered the king, \u201cwhen my children fire their pistols.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cBut they will hinder the army and confuse all our maneuvers.\u201d On the contrary, the king insisted, \u201ctheir songs will cheer my soldiers, and make them fight more bravely and march more swiftly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>\u201cBut the children cannot understand the commands of the officers,\u201d persisted these older soldiers. \u201cWhy, my dear sirs,\u201d said the king, \u201cthe ears of children are much sharper than those of their elders, and when well taught they are quick to obey. Indeed, my officers,\u201d said this great king, \u201cthe children love me, and I love them. I want them in my army, and I must have them, to fight for me, and be protected by me and you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>This great king, children, is Jesus Christ, and the army is his church. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was once a very great king who commanded a magnificent army.
