Divide the Lord\u2019s Prayer into the eight sections named below, and print each in large letters upon a long strip of cardboard or pasteboard, the whole being arranged so that it may be fitted together upon a blackboard or screen. Paint each section differently, as indicated below:\u2014<\/p>\n
Our Father who art in heaven\u2014gold.<\/p>\n
Hallowed be thy name\u2014green (the thought being of evergreen).<\/p>\n
Thy kingdom come\u2014purple, the royal color.<\/p>\n
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven\u2014blue, the sky color.<\/p>\n
Give us this day our daily bread\u2014yellow, the bread color.<\/p>\n
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors\u2014silver, in thought of coins.<\/p>\n
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil\u2014red, which represents sin, and also Christ\u2019s blood, which delivers us from sin.<\/p>\n
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.\u2014white, since this sums up all the colors.<\/p>\n
At the meeting, these sections will be held by eight children, who will come forward one by one when called for, hand in their portions of the prayer, and at the same time read them aloud. The speaker will talk a little about each section of the prayer as it is handed in, telling its meaning, and illustrating it by some story from the Bible. The stories I suggest are:\u2014<\/p>\n
Our Father\u2014what Christ said about God\u2019s care for the world, that not a sparrow falls without his knowledge.<\/p>\n
Hallowed be thy name\u2014the giving of the Ten Commandments, and especially the third one. <\/p>\n
Thy kingdom come\u2014Christ\u2019s parable of the mustard seed. <\/p>\n
Thy will be done\u2014Christ\u2019s prayer in Gethsemane.<\/p>\n
Our daily bread\u2014Elijah fed by the ravens, or the story of the manna.<\/p>\n
Forgive us our debts\u2014the parable of the unjust steward.<\/p>\n
Lead us not into temptation\u2014the story of Christ\u2019s temptation.<\/p>\n
For thine is the glory\u2014John\u2019s vision of the glorified Christ.<\/p>\n
After each section, as it is thus considered, have the children repeat that part of the prayer softly together. When the entire prayer has been talked over, and stands in its various colored sections before the children, have them all fold their hands and repeat the whole of it together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
