{"id":14852,"date":"2016-08-18T01:40:15","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T06:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/wasocallaghans-bombshell-a-dud\/"},"modified":"2016-08-18T01:40:15","modified_gmt":"2016-08-18T06:40:15","slug":"wasocallaghans-bombshell-a-dud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/sermons\/wasocallaghans-bombshell-a-dud\/","title":{"rendered":"WAS\nO\u2019CALLAGHAN\u2019S BOMBSHELL A DUD?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>In our Spring 1972 issue, we published an article entitled \u201cO\u2019Callaghan\u2019s Bombshell,\u201d reporting on the electrifying claim made by Jesuit scholar Jos\u00e9 O\u2019Callaghan that fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls were portions of the New Testament dating to A.D. 50. Dr. William White, a linguistics expert, immediately came out in support of O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s identification (see <i>Bible and Spade,<\/i> Spring 1972, pp. 39-40, and Winter 1973, pp. 15-18). As indicated in the aforementioned articles, however, many scholars were skeptical because of a number of problems associated with the identification (see also <i>Bible and Spade,<\/i> Spring 1973, pp. 57-58).<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>In the intervening two years since Dr. O\u2019Callaghan made his announcement, there has been a flood of scholarly articles written on the subject and, with the exception of Dr. White\u2019s, all have been critical of O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>The best summary of the controversy printed to date was an article in the September 28, 1973 issue of <i>Christianity Today.<\/i> In this article. Dr. E. Jerry Vardaman, professor of archaeology and religion at the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University, presented a summary of the criticisms scholars have raised against the identification. He concluded by saying, \u201cWe can confidently say, therefore, that O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s theory remains unlikely. In other words, we are led step by step to the conviction that O\u2019Callaghan has not as yet demonstrated sufficiently that Qumran Cave 7 has yielded fragments of Mark\u2019s Gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:3.0pt;text-indent:18.0pt;line-height: normal'>It appears that unless further support is forthcoming in the way of additional evidence, O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s \u201cbombshell\u201d will turn out to be a dud!<\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal align=right style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:right; line-height:normal'><i>BSP<\/i> 3:2 (Spring 1974) p. 56<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our Spring 1972 issue, we published an article entitled \u201cO\u2019Callaghan\u2019s Bombshell,\u201d reporting on the electrifying claim made by Jesuit scholar Jos\u00e9 O\u2019Callaghan that fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls were portions of the New Testament dating to A.D. 50.
