Rome, Feb. 9 \u2014 An Italian archaeologist flew to Iraq today to start to rebuild ancient Babylon and the Tower of Babel.<\/p>\n
Archaeologist Giorgio Gullini has been entrusted by the Iraqi government with the task of breathing life back into 30 centuries of civilization that existed in a city covering 21 square miles, he said before taking off. He added:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are something like astronauts exploring time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Babylon that existed 3, 000 years before Christ is not only covered with earth, but with subsurface water that has to be drained. That will be the first job.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother task will be uncovering the ruins of the immense walls that surrounded the city, and the street network inside them.\u201d<\/p>\n
It will be the first time that archaeologists have tried to reconstitute different periods of the same city.<\/p>\n
