(December 17, 1807\u2013September 7, 1892), was an American poet. He was known as the \u201cQuaker Poet,\u201d as his faith was exhibited in his life and poetry. He wrote Panorama,<\/i> in 1856, which included the favorites \u201cBarefoot Boy,\u201d and \u201cMaud Muller.\u201d His other renowned works include: Song of the Vermonteers,<\/i> 1779; Lays of My Home and other poems,<\/i> 1843; Voices of Freedom,<\/i> 1846; Snowbound,<\/i> 1866; Justice and Expediency<\/i>; Dear Lord<\/i> and Father of Mankind.<\/i><\/p>\n
He was the editor of the American Manufacturer,<\/i> the Essex Gazette,<\/i> The Pennsylvania Freeman,<\/i> and the National Era.<\/i> He bitterly opposed slavery, to the extent that once he was mobbed and severely beaten during a speaking tour. Later his office in Philadelphia was burned. John Greenleaf Whittier, one of the first to suggest the creation of a Republican Party, wrote:<\/p>\n
I believe in the Scriptures because they repeat the warnings and promises of the indwelling Light and Truth; I find in them the eternal precepts of the Divine Spirit declared and repeated. They testify of Christ within. \u2026 <\/p>\n
My ground of hope for myself and for humanity is in that Divine fullness which was manifested in the life, teachings, and self-sacrifice of Christ. In the infinite mercy of God so revealed, and not in any work or merit of my own nature, I humbly, yet very hopefully, trust.2257<\/p>\n
In 1876, one hundred years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence and shortly after the Civil War had ended, John Greenleaf Whittier wrote his Centennial Hymn<\/i>:<\/p>\n
We meet today, united free,<\/p>\n
And loyal to our land and Thee,<\/p>\n
To thank Thee for the era done, <\/p>\n
And trust Thee for the opening one.<\/p>\n
O make Thou us, through centuries long,<\/p>\n
In peace secure, in justice strong;<\/p>\n
Around our gift of freedom draw<\/p>\n
The safeguards of Thy righteous law:<\/p>\n
And, cast in some diviner mould,<\/p>\n
Let the new cycle shame the old!2258<\/p>\n
In poetic verse, John Greenleaf Whittier expressed:<\/p>\n
The Word of God<\/i><\/p>\n
Voice of the Holy Spirit, making known<\/p>\n
Man to himself, a witness swift and sure,<\/p>\n
Warning, approving, true and wise and pure,<\/p>\n
Counsel and guidance that misleadeth none!<\/p>\n
By Thee the mystery of Life is read;<\/p>\n
The picture writing of the world\u2019s gray seers,<\/p>\n
The myths and parables of the primal years,<\/p>\n
Whose letter kills, by thee interpreted<\/p>\n
Take healthful meanings fitted to our needs,<\/p>\n
And in the soul\u2019s vernacular express<\/p>\n
The common law of simple righteousness.<\/p>\n
Hatred of cant and doubt of human creeds<\/p>\n
May well be felt the unpardonable sin<\/p>\n

Our Master<\/i><\/p>\n
We may not climb the heavenly steeps<\/p>\n
To bring the Lord Christ down;<\/p>\n
In vain we search the lowest deeps,<\/p>\n

Whate\u2019er our name or sign,<\/p>\n
We own Thy sway, we hear Thy call,<\/p>\n
